World Tourism Forum 2021 to be hosted by Pakistan
Pakistan; a land that boasts rugged natural beauty, cultural richness, and unparalleled hospitality. In recent years the country is heavily investing in growing its tourism industry. Pakistan received a highly publicized visit from Prince William and Kate Middleton in October 2019. Magazines such as Forbes and others have also declared Pakistan as the best tourist destination in 2020.
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis, Sayed Zulfiqar Abbas Bukhari, also the Chairman Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation, announced Pakistan will host the World Tourism Forum in Islamabad. Tourism ministers from the Developing 8 (D-8) countries are invited to be a part of the summit in 2021, including Turkey. The World Tourism Forum based in Istanbul, Turkey is dedicated to developing tourism around the world with its annual meetings. Leaders in the field will come together to discuss ideas and opportunities to collectively promote tourism. He also said the government will launch an E-portal to attract tourism in the country. “Pakistan has a huge tourism potential that we want to introduce to the world, especially the Muslim world,” Bukhari said.
The importance of sustainable tourism for Pakistan
Pakistan has six UNESCO World Heritage sites. We are a land built upon rich history, wildlife and fauna, wetlands, diverse terrain and culture. From Indus Valley Civilization and Mohenjo-Daro to some of the most sacred sites for Hinduism, Sikhism, Sufiism and Buddhism; Pakistan caters to scenic and religious tourism equally. Bukhari assured that all initiatives have been taken to use the potential of PTDC to uplift the long-neglected sector. After a long struggle with terrorism, developing the tourism industry will consequently promote Pakistan’s image as a peaceful country. Increased employment, flourishing industries and foreign revenue are additional benefits, linked with the potential of tourism. If a strong foundation is laid down, then surely our tourism industry can have a strong influence in reshaping our economy.
