Pakistanis never fail to make us proud. A Karachi-born female scientist is heading Germany’s most successful research organization. Asifa Akhtar, is the first international female Vice President of the Biology and Medicine section at the prestigious Max Planck Society in Germany. She completed her Doctorate at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London, in 1997. When she moved to Germany, the next year she became a Postdoctoral fellow at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg and the Adolf Butenandt Institute in Munich from 1998 to 2001. She was awarded the Early Career European Life Science Organization Award in 2008. In addition to this, she also won the EMBO membership in 2013 and the Feldberg Prize in 2017. From there she was elected as a member of the National Academy of Science Leopoldina in 2019. Her vision. As a woman herself, she strongly believes in women empowerment and provision of opportunities for women to excel in science. “On the off chance that we need ladies to advance in science, we have to empower down to earth arrangements, for example, childcare and time-sharing or home office alternatives.” She strongly advocates gender equality in the professional field as well. “Gender equality needs to be worked on continuously. There are outstanding women in science and we should make all efforts and use our resources to win them for the Max Planck Society.” Moreover, she is also closely associated with Max Planck schools and the young students who study there. “My heart pulsates for the youthful researchers,” she said, realizing the potential of youth. “Scholastic science is a delightful case of coordination since you have individuals from everywhere throughout the world trading information past limits, societies or bias,” she spoke to the general public in a meeting. Asifa Akhtar, is a name now added to the most extraordinary Pakistani women in the world. She is a living example of how women can make a difference in their professional careers. She reminds us how, staying focused and true to your goal can do wonders.
