Osteoporosis and the Role of Milk

Osteoporosis, or “porous bones,” is the weakening of bones caused by an imbalance between bone building and bone destruction. Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses like bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. People aged 45 or older are more prone to the disease.

As the population of Pakistan in increasing, so is the osteoporosis disease. According to Pakistan International Osteoporosis Foundation report which clearly states, “While there is no clear data on the number of osteoporotic fractures per year, estimates based on a large ultrasound study conducted throughout the country suggested that there are 9.91 million people (7.19 million women and 2.71 million men) with osteoporosis. These numbers are estimated to rise to 11.3 million (in 2020) and 12.91 million (in 2050).”

Osteoporosis occurs mainly due to less or no intake of calcium. Pakistan is fourth biggest country to produce 36.2 million tons milk per year, producing a rich source of calcium yet its people suffer due to lack of the nutrition that milk can provide. Most of the milk producing companies add chemicals to the milk to improve their volume and generate greater sales. On the other hand the common milk men add water or other harmful substances to multiply milk volume. Either way killing the actual nutrition that was to be provided by milk.

According to Harvard – School of Public Health, “Despite the debates surrounding milk and calcium, one thing is clear: adequate calcium—both for bone development and for non-bone functions—is key to reducing the risk of osteoporosis.”
